Thesis Design Post - Updating - 30/7

>case study - part
>target building model
>shading design

>shoebox daylight factor extract
>how shading works

Research Question:
What is the influence of different building orientation on façade solar radiation?
What is the influence of different window height on room daylight performance?
What is the principle of dynamic shading systems?
What is the principle of fixed shading devices?
Do dynamic shading systems help saving cost in long terms?
Do dynamic shading panels achieve benefits in improving interior lighting performance in Sheffield?

Research Aim:
To investigate the effect of dynamic shading panels to advance interior lighting performance in Sheffield.

Research Objectives:
  1. To classify and evaluate the operation process of dynamic shading panels;
  2. To compare the performance between dynamic and fixed shading panels;
  3.  To discover the potential use of dynamic shading panels in other climate zones.

Methodology

  • Sampling design and BIM implementation
A sample evaluation will be initialized based on data modeling, which includes the BIM (Building Information Modeling) data file and specific parameters of shading panels’ definition. The model will identify the basic principle of target system as can be used to simulate the working performance. Designed shading device could be relevant to existing systems, which will be used testing the possibility of achieving objectives.

  • Simulation and data evaluation
The data analysis will be based on built data models. A very good source of previous research by Housladen, indicates some quantitative research on daylight impact based on specific parameters: window-to-wall ratio, façade orientation, seasons and climate zones. Sampling comparison between simulation results involves evaluating daylighting performance in different depth. Comparison of operation cost and saving profit shall be included to describe different shading systems.

COMFEN Software for 'shoebox' analysis of facade performance

Watch COMFEN introduction video

A number of you may find this very useful software for performing a complex set of analysis and simulation on a facade element. It is especially useful when you are only testing a typical facade arrangement and are not interested in a more detailed building analysis.

Get COMFEN here.
